Ignorance Is Bliss

What? A deviation that's in COLOR? Good golly Miss Molly, ol' Nicky musta been slipped a Mickey.....


Yeah, I've been home all day. So excuse all the unnecessary rhymning....

Anyway, remember who-knows-when that my work was in an art show? Well, this was the body of work that made it. Amazing what they'll do to fill up wall space at a show .
The title of this "gem" is entitled "Ignorance Is Bliss". It measures in at 18"x24" and is rendered in airbrush and India Ink. I did this way the hell back in October of 2004 for my Fundamentals of 2D design class. Funny thing about this piece, my professor didn't "get it" and gave me a B+, but it gained cult status among my fellow art peers and at the show. The whole thought process behind this was that I'm fascinated with combining words and images (hence why I wanted to be a cartoonist). I wanted to do something that would have a phrase and no particular message to it but to have it all connect to the pic. I don't remember how I thought of everything but the gist is the girl is gleefully happy on the surface, oblivious to all that is around her. The wiltering flower (somewhat obsructed by the flash of my camera) is a sign that all is not well, and the airbrushed skulls is evidence of the impending doom to befall us all. Yet the woman smiles. Even though its merely superficial, and that superficiality can be seen through to the fate of all (a happy accident of art), she continues to smile. The phrase states I feel a universal feeling for anyone and everyone: we are happy with the less that we know. The more we know, the more worries and problems arise. It's better to not know certain aspects of life, as if we did........who knows what kind of Pandora's Box would be unleashed. Thus, Ignorance is Bliss indeed.
