So.....

I realize that I haven't posted a journal entry on here since December. Oops. Truth be told, I post much more on Facebook (The Art of Nick Mockoviak) and Instagram (NickMockoviak), so please follow me on there (I'm also on Tumblr and Twitter, but my IG and FB page both link to those two, so it really doesn't matter. Unless it's here.)

I've been on deviantART for 10 years. A decade. I have seen many changes on here, from all the (sometimes frustrating) layout changes, to the users on this site, the types of art submitted, and all in between. Some of the changes have been good, and some are puzzling. My feeling is that after this current subscription runs dry, I will probably let this spot fall to pieces. The main reason why I started this page was to promote my artwork and make connections with others in the industry of cartoons and comics. For me, the well has run dry years ago. I know that keeping a presence here is still valuable, but increasingly I find that my own use for said purposes is a battle in vain. As my buddy Jerome Moore would say, your mileage may vary.

I looked over my work that I have posted on here. It's fascinating to view the progress and evolution of one's work, especially over the course of 10 years. I went from black and white ink work to markers to watercolors- comic book characters to monsters to more monsters to animals and flowers- and whatever else caught my eye. Though I have never had a Daily Deviation, my work has not been "Hot", I'm not remotely popular, I don't do fan art of anime/manga or mash-ups, I work traditionally, I don't understand a lot of the "in-jokes" on here.....I have and always will continue to push myself to be more well-rounded as a person and an artist. I will continue to learn new media, new techniques, draw upon new subject matter, and experiment with all of the above, plus 3.

Maybe one day I'll get that Daily Deviation. Or I'll "make it" (which is a great documentary by the way). Until then, I'm going to carry on as I have.
Butterfly study by NickMockoviak
Butterfly study

Butterfly.

Went a lot further than I expected with this one. This was just suppose to be a study for my next painting, but the original photograph had a nice blur effect that I wanted to see if I could replicate. I dripped marker refill and rubbing alcohol to achieve this effect. Not totally successful, but as always- you live and you learn.

Departure by NickMockoviak
Departure
First completed watercolor of 2015.

On the advice of my watercolor teacher and other friends, I was challenged to do more "symbolic" work- to push myself beyond just portraiture and tell a story. The idea behind this piece evolved over the course of two weeks. I wanted to do a piece that represented death, but go in a bit of a different direction (at least for me). The skull was a given, but the other elements was a give-and-take process. I had an hourglass and melted candle worked up, but they didn't work in the overall flow of the composition. The flowers changed, but I settled on the marigold and poppy. The crow fell into place. The cocoon is the link to the next piece, which you might be able to figure out.

The background was the most challenging to execute, as I did this part last. I poured the paint wet-on-wet and without any masking- no frisket paper, no liquid masking, nada.  Because this was done on a 14"x20" watercolor block, I had to be careful and pour in sections. There are portions that worked out really well and some that aren't as successful, but it's all part of the learning process.

Calavera Girl by NickMockoviak
Calavera Girl
Here's a drawing that sat incomplete for almost a year. I has started a marker demo on this piece, but life happens and didn't get to finish (one day though....). I've been very intrigued by all the calavera designs for Day Of The Dead, so I figured I would incorporate a nice face to put the designs on. I would love to continue this concept sometime in the future.

For the background I used colorless blender refill and dripped it over the markers. I also used a white gel pen for highlights.
